Position & Organization: Director of Community Relations, Dougherty County School System
What project are you most proud of in your district/organization?: We have so much going on in our district that we've implemented in the last few years that focus on eliminating the nonacademic barriers that our students face. We serve students in one of the the most impoverished congressional districts of the state of Georgia. Many of our students don't get proper medical care. Many need mental and behavioral health support. With community partnerships, we've been able to open medical, dental and vision clinics in our schools. And we're opening a mental health clinic in January 2020 in one of our schools. One of the biggest issues we tackle is food insecurity. So many of our students don't have adequate food in their homes and they don't eat or have access to meals when schools are closed. I'm very proud of a partnership that now allows our students to pick up a bag packed with food every Friday so that they can have food over the weekend. It may not seem big to some, but for many of our kids that bag means everything.
